Required skill training sessions to get prepared for a wonderful week of service.

Every new skill you learn, every new adventure you go on, every new thing you try, it only makes you a better person.

Anyone who has not participated in ASP or the At Home project before is required to attend a 2.5-hour session that will include brief lectures and demonstrations on work site safety. It will also include instruction and supervised individual practice on the safe use of the circular saw, power drill, and hammer.

All ASP At Home participants are required to participate in a wheelchair ramp building session. This 3 hour session is designed to imitate a standard workday. Participants will be assigned a work crew based on experience and will assist in the creation of several segments of a wheelchair ramp.

RETURNING VOLUNTEERS are given the option of taking the 3-hour Ramp Building skills session or working on a full day Spirit Builders ramp. This option is called Senior Skills. Ramps are usually built the first Saturday of each month. The work day is approximately 9:00 AM until about 5:00 PM. Volunteers stay until the ramp is finished. Ramps are built all over CT, usually within a 1-hour drive. Spirit Builders often carpool to the job site. Teens are welcome to join these carpools.

Lunch is usually provided on all-day ramp builds, but volunteers should bring a snack and water bottle. Everyone needs to wear proper work site attire: long pants, a shirt that tucks in (no sleeveless shirts; no low necklines), work boots (no sneakers). Everyone needs to bring a 16 oz. hammer, a pair of safety glasses, a pair of work gloves, a tape measure, a speed square, and a pencil in a sturdy bag.

To be eligible, volunteers will need to register and turn in a Jesse Lee Waiver form prior to participating in Basic Skills, Ramp Building or Senior Skills.  (Jesse Lee Waiver)

Volunteers can work on Spirit Builder ramps any month after they have registered for ASP at Home and turned in their Jesse Lee Waiver form. Ramps built in February, March, April, May and June are eligible for Senior Skills credit. If you’re interested in Senior Skills, text Mike Lynch at 914-879-8051.
